CRISES OF DISILLUSIONMENT

 Rethinking Perspectives for Enduring Hope

Lay in bed, grappling with the question of why

it's worth getting up, a sense of darkness engulfs me. These pervasive thoughts of despair and disillusionment have become increasingly prevalent among the emerging generation, burdened with higher levels of stress, anxiety, fear, and hopelessness.

It's intriguing to ponder why this age group, which has enjoyed a more comfortable and privileged life compared to previous generations, finds themselves haunted by such contemplations. Could it be that their outlook on life and the world has been built upon insufficient foundations? What can be the answer for those who are trapped in depression and discontent?

Assumptions, desires, and confidence always find their roots in some underlying foundation. Trust is nurtured by faith, belief, or hopeful expectations. There exist various potential foundations or beliefs upon which we could construct our lives, but they often prove inadequate. Let us delve into a few of them: American NLM explained here the relationship between disillusionment and emotions.

The notion that life is good:

This belief stems from the experiences of those who have enjoyed comfort and material wealth. Their high expectations lead them to hope for a lifestyle equal to or surpassing that of their parents. However, the uncertainty of the economy and the challenges of the job market have cast a shadow on this hope. Life doesn't feel all that great when one is unemployed, struggling to pay bills, and unable to afford the things they desire.

The belief in fulfilling relationships: According to this perspective, life is an intricate web of connections that provide meaning and purpose to our daily existence. However, when relationships become strained or crumble, this social fabric no longer serves as a foundation for hope. The increasing number of divorced parents and fractured relationships among family members or friends sheds light on why nearly 62% of surveyed students reported feeling lonely. Life loses its luster when people betray, misunderstand, or abandon you.

Expectations for a promising future: Similar to the "Life is good" belief, this perspective hinges on anticipating a positive future. It is the belief that through hard work and determination, any obstacle can be overcome.

This confidence arises from self-assurance and the fundamental belief that humanity is inherently good, continuously progressing towards a better world.

However, frequent disruptive events reported in the news, coupled with tragedies like 9/11, mass shootings, armed conflicts, and natural disasters, erode this hope for a brighter tomorrow. Personal failures or overwhelming challenges can also shake this foundation. It is no wonder that the temptation to roll over and remain in bed looms large.

Each of these foundations for hope relies on placing faith in fragile elements such as the economy, relationships, the inherent goodness of humanity, or self-belief. While these options are not inherently flawed, they fall short as a solid foundation for enduring hope.

Enduring hope necessitates a foundation that is stable and unwavering. Many would argue that faith in God can provide such a steadfast and eternal foundation in this age of disillusionment. But why is that?

God is unchanging, inherently good, and loving towards us. Personal faith in God offers a sufficient and everlasting foundation for navigating life in a tumultuous and ever-changing world. Trusting in God's goodness brings hope even in the most distressing circumstances.

The knowledge that God comprehends and cares for us with perfect love and goodness instills a sense of security in the face of an uncertain future. A relationship with God is eternal, offering ultimate hope both in the present and beyond this life.

Moreover, research conducted at the University of Alberta sheds light on the prevalence of disillusionment and mental health issues among the emerging generation. In a 2011 National College Health

 Assessment survey with

1,600 students, alarming statistics emerged: 51.3% felt things were irredeemable, 52.1% experienced overwhelming anxiety, 61.7% felt lonely, and 34.4% were depressed to the point of impaired functioning (Maclean's, September 5, 2012). These findings emphasize the urgent need to address the crisis of disillusionment and offer viable solutions for lasting hope.

Reflecting upon the frequently quoted words from the Gospel of John: "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son so that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life" (John 3:16 ), we find an invitation from God to establish a personal relationship with Him through Jesus. This offer does not hinge upon our goodness but rather on the way He loves us, providing a foundation for enduring hope amidst the crisis of disillusionment.
